52 Teeth – the mp3 blog of Baby Teeth

Welcome to 52 Teeth  – the mp3 blog of Baby Teeth, a Chicago-based pop-rock quartet that’s toured extensively in the US and released 3 albums on DC’s Lujo Records since 2003.  Every Monday, a new, original demo recording is posted here along with comments from songwriter, Abraham Levitan, about how, what, when and where each song was written.  Fans and strangers alike are encouraged to rate, review, make suggestions and interact directly with the band as they compose and create new music.

    Mr A..

I am energized by the prospect of weekly listening…and of course by the prospect of songs that pay homage to the musical epochs I celebrated in my halcyon days. But I need to have a song/paean to the bubblegum 60s heyday (spend an hour listening to the 1910 Fruitgum Co/Ohio Express./Crazy Elephant compilation CD that I KNOW you have!) as well as the lounge soul blue eyed output of the same era (spend an hour listening to the Mike & The Messengers Greatest Hits CD that I KNOW you have).. I am now back in Hong Kong and reflecting on the wonderful night last Sat., especially since the prospects for listening to appealing music in these parts is, as I reiterated on Sat eve, nil. Suffice it to say that the best group out here is an electro-pop group called Pixel Toy. Need I say more? The rest is pastiche or worse. I just finished a song called “They Castrated John Lennon..” obviously coming from a dark place (easy to find after seeing the Cirque Las Vegas “Love” fiasco) and a place to which all those of my age need to go (at least those like myself who do not make trips to the golf course)…Again…kudos on the song of the week….You will triumph over all pretenders…Your Asian colleague…Barry

well barry, I am glad to know that you have safely returned to hong kong, even if it does mean that you’re left all alone with Pixel Toy. (although they sound kind of cool…?) I’m sure that your dark place will bear fruit. and cheers to you for sitting through cirque las vegas!

    beauty is not always polished.
sometimes you need to sit on it like an egg.
cracks can reveal color and blood and fluids real men let go.
cept for T.O. yeesh, what a baby!
    but he’s no artist
    and you are.

    thanks for sharing,
making the most of the technology for us to embrace and consume.

ahhh…warmth thru machinery and winter tundra.
it’s enuff to make me wanna say again Thank You so much!
and please don’t hardboil your beauty.
    unless you’re hungry of course.

you guys do any boston covers live?

  5. Abraham Says:

thanks marqus. thanks especially for the T.O. reference — I’ve always been in favor of more sports talk on this blog!!! no, we’ve never done a boston cover live, although that wouldn’t be totally out of character I guess.

  6. marqus Says:

wish i could see the Chi-town show.
maybe on yer next NY visit~

    more sports talk eh?
    well let’s start here..
i’m a huge baseball and yankees fan.
don’t hate me because i’m beautiful. there.
that should make me an enemy.

    but i digress.
i’ve always thought that many songs from the 1st boston album could be done maybe in half-time, slower, bluesier with great effect.
take smokin fer instance..think about it.

saw a listing tonight that Foghat is coming to town..well damn, i saw the original version umpteen times in my southern youth days..lonesome dave is dead (rip bro-), so is the lead guitarist. So.. is that BABY TEETH pulling a Foghat tribute band? Who’s left from the original band anyway?

Wake me when Blackfoot reunites..though the native american bonham jakson spires also passed away. that dude kicked major ass. that band was amazing..saw em blow the doors offa every headliner they warmed up for..noone stood a chance! not Nazareth, UFO, Foreigner…and that was the double vision tour!

    ok showing my age.
but as much as i love my weekly baby teeth and so much new musics still, i’ll always fall back on my comfort food music of yesteryear.

i feel a steely dan moment coming on.
    must be something i drank.
    i mean drink.

    continued awesomeness!

    suckin down the line…
    marqus

  7. Abraham Says:

thank you marqus…. this is definitely one of the best comments in the history of this blog.

if the blackfoot reunion ever happens, I will be sure to shell out my twenty bux.

    Abraham,

Tom Hurley here… British based live music photographer, presently based in Chapel Hill, NC.

So there I was, sitting in a bar in Carrboro, NC, when I heard the simply epic strains of the Hammond in Celebrity Wedding blasting out across the bar. Never heard the track before and immediately loved it (I admit a strong, and almost irrational B3 love). Found out who the track was by, then found more of your music. Simply brilliant.

Now I run a little radio show here in NC on WCOM, and will continue to do so for the next few weeks until I have to return to the UK (I’ve been here since September 2007). The show is called Three Degrees West, this being the longditude of where in the UK I hail from. The purpose of the show is to re-import great British music to a US audience and (politely) remind them that The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Zeppelin, etc etc are originally British. Even the slimmest of British links can still count.

The only problem with Three Degrees West is that there are some songs that I can find not even the most tenuous UK link to. Now this was beginning to get to me as I had a stack of US music that I was desperate to play. The joy, however, of having my own show is that I make up the rules, so the rules have been amended such that this week, between 4pm and 6.30pm (EDT), Three Degrees West has morphed into 79 Degrees West (longditude of Chapel Hill, NC), and all the tracks will be from the US. I see it as giving something back to my loyal audience…

The station have given me an extension this week – an extra half hour – in recognition of this fine cause, but that still gives time for maybe 30 tracks in total? Not much, given at least half a century of an entire continent’s greatest rock and roll to choose from. Well, Celebrity Wedding is in there, and justifyably so. And not only does my show have a local audience on FM, but it also has listeners across the world (several European countries, the UK, New Zealand, and many US states too).

So really this is simply a heads up to let you know that both myself and my UK based executive producer think that Celebrity Wedding is a great track, and if you should be listening this Wednesday (28th May) via http://www.communityradio.coop then it will be hitting the airwaves. And if you really want to make my day, please get in touch with the show while it’s on (919-929-9601). Even an email to threedegreeswest@gmail.com that we can read out would be a fine start!

Keep the Leslie spinning for us…

    Tom

  9. Abraham Says:

Thank you so much Tom! What an incredible email! We have always suspected that Baby Teeth would have a great time over in the UK, and your email seems like yet another sign pointing in that direction. One of these days. Email coming shortly.

    Hello,

My name is Jesse and I stumbled upon your WordPress blog
several days ago. I have noticed that you are not posting to your blog regularly anymore and have not posted to it in a long time. In light of this I was wondering if you might be interested in selling it.

Please get back to me and let me know either way.
